A two-story plaza collapsed in the Eke Amawbia market in Anambra State’s Awka South local government area, close to Awka – the state capital. Several persons are believed to be trapped.

A thriving commercial center, fears are growing of a high number of persons trapped in the rubble.
According to eyewitnesses, the two-story building abruptly collapsed, burying numerous vegetable vendors beneath the rubble. At least one person has been saved and rushed to nearby Amawbia Maternity Home.
Security personnel have shown and coordinating rescue operations.
Traders who observed the collapse blamed the accident on poor engineering work, claiming that the building’s structural integrity had been undermined, but there is no official confirmation of this position.
The market is reportedly tense as people are apprehensive about the fate of their loved ones supposedly buying or selling in and around the building.
The Awka South local government area’s officials who came to the scene vowed to make a statement shortly.
