Cristiano Ronaldo’s cry after missing a penalty in extra time in the match between Portugal and Slovenia has been called “embarrassing” by German football great Didi Hamann.
As the thrilling match got into extra time, it seemed like a brake for Portugal and Slovenia was gone, but the brilliant save by Jan Oblak preserved the score tied.
During halftime in extra time, the 39-year-old was seen crying, and his teammates were comforting him.
In the end, Portugal prevailed 3-0 in a penalty shootout, with Diogo Costa stopping all three attempts from Slovenia and Ronaldo scoring one before expressing regret to the crowd.
“The 39-year-old plays 120 minutes, misses a penalty, and I have to admit, I bought into all that ‘Ronaldo has turned into a team player because he needs the team more than he used to,’” Hamann remarked in an interview with RTE.
“I also bought into that nonsense, but I think he showed his true colors again tonight.
“Missing the penalty, he starts crying on the pitch, he starts crying at half-time in extra-time. And I’m thinking, ‘It’s all about you.’

Critics say Ronaldo is always hard on himself and is constantly weighed down by his fans’ perceived expectations of him.
