The Federal government has defended the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, just hours after the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) raised an alarm about an overt plot to dethrone one of Nigeria’s foremost traditional rulers.
At a gathering of distinguished, predominantly northern figures, Vice President Kashim Shettima underscored that the Sultan is not just a person, but an integral part of our cultural fabric that should never be treated lightly.
He said that although Sa’ad Abubakar III is the “Sultan of Sokoto, he is much more than that.”
According to Shettima, the Sultan represents an “idea” but did not elaborate on what the idea entails.
He pointedly addressed the Deputy Governor or Sokoto State, Idris Muhammad Gobir who was present at the event to recognize that “all of us in this country need to jealous guard, protect, promote, preserve, and project” the Sultan “for the good of our nation”.
The government of Sokoto State has not rebutted the series of allegations regarding its intent. However, recent moves to amend the local government and chieftaincy law in the state left many observers uneasy, in light of similar legislation that was used to depose two different sitting emirs of the ancient Kano Emirate in 2019 and 2023.
