In an apparent preemptive strike against the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) which had threatened to commence disconnection of big ticket debtors, the offices of EEDC were on Tuesday shut down by men of the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority (ECTDA).

EEDC claimed it is being owed a staggering ₦180 billion in unpaid debts, and Enugu State government alone owed over ₦1 billion.

It gave a list of debtors including several state governments in the SouthEast region and big corporations.

EEDC spokesperson Emeka Ezeh said in a statement that the electricity workers were surprised to find their headquarters at Garden Avenue, G.R.A, Enugu locked when they arrived on Tuesday morning for work. Security personnel informed them that a group of men had locked the gates around 1:53 a.m., claiming they were acting on the orders of the governor, Peter Mbah.

In addition to the headquarters, the ECTDA also sealed EEDC offices in Abakpa, Awkunanaw, and Ogui. Mr. Ezeh described the development as “strange,” noting that the EEDC had received no prior notification from the ECTDA. “The ECTDA has not provided any clear information or communication outlining their action,” he stated.

Enugu State Government is one of the indebted customers, owing over N1 billion to EEDC. It is important to note that most state government facilities are metered, so this is not a case of estimated billing,” said Mr. Ezeh.

ECTDA has not made any official statement regarding the event.

With the EEDC offices shut, the electric company obviously will neither be able to carry out its disconnection threat nor its maintenance responsibilities on the infrastructure.
