Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticized President Bola Tinubu for deceiving Nigerians on the issue of fuel subsidy.
In a statement, Abubakar pointed out that despite Tinubu’s “bragging” that he has stopped using fuel since May 29, 2023, he “was shocked to learn…the government is still supporting downstream consumption.”
Finance Minister, Wale Edun, had this afternoon flipped the lid over the controversial subsidy issue when in presenting a document – Accelerated Stabilisation and Advancement Plan (ASAP), revealed that for 2024 alone, the government of Tinubu would have paid N5.4 Trillion in subsidy, well over N3.6 padi by the previous regime of ex-President Mohammadu Buhari.
Abubakar called to question Mr. Tinubu’s “opaqueness” in the management of the subsidy situation. “what would we say of a situation where the subsidy is still being paid under the cover without Nigerians in the know?”, Atiku asked.
The former vice President said as far as he is concerned, “Nigeria is not working”.
“I wish to restate that Nigeria is not working, and what we have had in a little over a year is a cocktail of trial-and-error economic policies. Paying subsidies and lying about it is nothing to brag about. Nigerians deserve better than this deception.”.
Atiku Abubakar’s statement reflects the concerns of many Nigerians over the country’s economic direction and calls for the Tinubu administration to provide clear, transparent information on the fuel subsidy regime.
