In a crackdown on cybercrime, men of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Uyo Zonal Command, have arrested 40 persons suspected of internet fraud. The arrests occurred Thursday May 30 early morning during sting operations at two locations in Akwa Ibom State.

About 21 suspects were arrested in Eket and another 19 in Ikot Ekpene. All the suspects are male. The high number of the arrests may suggest the spreading and growing trend of internet fraud in the state.

Among the items seized from the suspects were a Toyota SUV XLE, nine laptop computers, 64 smartphones, an internet router, and a smartwatch.

The agency did not reveal what exactly they caught the suspects doing that constitutes a possible fraud.

EFCC confirmed the suspects are currently in their custody and that they will face charges in court “upon conclusion of investigations.” They says this is part of their commitment to combating cybercrime and bringing perpetrators to justice.

Online fraud has become a menace in Nigeria, perhaps due to high unemployment rate and worsening poverty.
