A two-story building collapsed today Thursday May 30 in the Isale Eko neighborhood of Lagos State, near the Oba of Lagos Palace. Initial reports indicate several persons are trapped inside the rubble.
The building is believed to have had structural flaws from a recent fire incident that severely impacted parts of the nearby Dosunmu Market on Lagos Island. Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye, the Lagos Territorial Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), confirmed the incident and reported that the Dosunmu fire in April affected at least 14 additional properties in the area.
“The integrity of the building was compromised after the fire affected several properties,” Farinloye said. “Emergency personnel, including NEMA, Federal and State Fire Services, the Nigeria Police, and fire crews, are on the scene conducting rescue operations.“
As rescue efforts continue, NEMA officials are urging residents to steer clear of the affected area to allow emergency workers free access to attempt to rescue those who may be trapped and need urgent medical attention.
Lagos has been grappling with incidences of structurally defective buildings collapsing, especially those built with substandard materials by cut-corner building contractors. Hundreds have lost their lives in several building collapse incidents across the Nigeria’s commercial capital city of Lagos.
