The Kano State House of Assembly has dissolved all four new emirate councils in the state and consolidated them back into one single Kano Emirate. Former Emir, Lamido Sanusi Lamido dethroned by the previous government has been re-appointed as Emir Of Kano.
The Assembly deliberated the Kano State Emirates Council Amendment Bill in plenary on Thursday and passed it. The bill scaled through first and second readings on Wednesday.
Deputy Speaker Muhammad Butu explained that repealing the law would restore Kano’s lost glory. He said the division of the Kano emirate into five diminished the state’s capacity and dignity on a national level.
Majority Leader Alhaji Lawan Dala on his part echoed the same sentiments. He described the emirate council, as a custodian of culture and unity that ought not have been subdivided in the first place.
Additionally, the House voted to adopt a motion calling on the establishment of a new second-class emirate council in the state.
Verdict Of History
Today’s legislative work will be seen as a blow to the legacy of former governor Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, now the Chairperson of Nigeria’s ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).
It was under Ganduje’s governorship that the Assembly in 2019 passed an executive bill to split the state into five emirates through the creation of additional four new ones.
Although the law suffered a temporary setback after the state high court nullified it and the appointment of its emirs, a fresh bill was reintroduced to the lawmakers by the then governor.
Kano emirates was then effectively broken down into Kano, Gaya, Rano, Karaye and Bich emirates – all with first class status.
Ganduje’s actions were seen as a move to whittle down the powers and influence of the powerful Emir of Kano, Lamido Sanusi Lamido and former Governor of Nigeria’s Central Bank of Nigeria. The Emir did not support the governor’s second term bid in 2019, and the governor accused him of political interference and insubordination.
He was subsequently dethroned on 9 March 2020 and replaced by Aminu Ado-Bayero, who was transferred from Bichi emirate to Kano.
With the new Sheriff in town, Gov. Abba Yusuf, of the opposition New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has re-appointed the former Emir Sanusi Lamido back to the throne.
