Russian President, Vladimir Putin is in China on his first state foreign trip since his new term in office began. He was welcomed by his Chinese counterpart, President Xi Jinping.
The two leaders among other things are discussing the situation in Ukraine. In an interview published early Wednesday, Putin said Russia now support China’s proposal on peaceful resolution of the Ukraine crisis. He said Beijing’s plan show China have a better understanding of the conflict’s underlying causes.
“We are positive in our assessment of China’s approach to solving the Ukrainian crisis,” Putin said,. “In Beijing, they truly understand its root causes and its global geopolitical meaning.“
Putin has always said he is open to dialogue and negotiations to end the conflict, which started in February 2022.
Last month, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called the Chinese 12 point proposal a “reasonable plan that the great Chinese civilization proposed for discussion”, although it initially received low appeal in both Russia and the West.
U.S. Prefers Zelensky’s Plan
United States said the Chinese plan was a rehearse of Russia’s “false narratives” about the war, and that it failed to condemn Russia for the invasion. America sees the conflict as a purely unwarranted Russian aggression and is determined to see Ukraine militarily triumph in the war. But Russia has geopolitical and strategic goals for the conflict such as preventing Ukraine from joining NATO.
America instead backs a peace plan being pushed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. But that seems dead on arrival. The plan demands the withdrawal of Russian troops, and restoration of Ukraine’s 1991 post-Soviet borders, effectively returning Crimea back to Ukraine.
However, a “peace summit” has been billed for June in Switzerland. Russia has not been directly invited but China has participated in some initial discussions for the summit but has offered no assurance of her attendance.
