A Nigerian man, Olubunmi Abodunde, has been convicted to a lifetime in jail for bludgeoning his wife to death.
The incident took place in the couple’s home in Exning Road, Newmarket, Suffolk, England, on November 28, 2023
Abodunde, 48, and his wife, Taiwo, 41, have been living in Suffolk since 2022 after emigrating from Nigeria. Taiwo was a nurse at a Cambridge care home. Abodunde worked with Tesco and Wickes.
On the day of the murder, Abodunde breached a restraining order on him and came into the house at about 9.20 am and brutally attacked his wife with their son’s skateboard. Autopsy also later showed signs of strangulation and stomping on the deceased.
Judges’ Verdict
During trial, it emerged Abodunde had been suspicious of his wife for infidelity, and the couple had other seriou disputes bordering on finances as well.
Judge Martyn Levett condemned the attack as “cold-blooded and callous” and handed Abodunde a mandatory life sentence with a minimum term of 17 years before eligibility for parole.
Initially, the convict denied the charge of murder but later during trial admitted he was guilty.
Following his plea change, the jury quickly returned a guilty verdict.
Suffolk Police itself is now being investigated for potential misconduct given that Late Tawio had previous interactions with the police department regarding her safety concerns.
Detective Inspector Dan Connick from Suffolk Police expressed hope the sentence would offer some solace to Taiwo Abodunde’s grieving family.
“I hope this sentence provides some comfort and reassurance to those most affected by the murder of Taiwo Abodunde, in particular, her family and friends“, he said.“Our thoughts remain with the family and all those who knew Taiwo.”
