Bandits launched a deadly assault on a military camp in Faskari Local Government Area of Katsina State, killing five soldiers and leaving eleven others injured, according to military sources.

The attack occurred in Yar Malamai Village Military Camp at about 2.00 pm on Sunday, May 12, 2024. Several civilians and local vigilante members were also killed in the attack including one 30-year-old vigilante, Aliyu Tukur.

This information gleaned from a military internal memo indicates the military estimates the assailants were over 200 led by notorious bandit kingpin Ado Aleiru.

The memo described the event as a “Terrorist attack on military camp causing grievous hurt and death of military personnel.”. It detailed how the soldiers quickly responded to the attack, aided by the airforce, and the battle lasted for over two hours but resulting in “heavy casualties” on both sides.

Excerpts From Memo

The military claims however the terrorists were able to cart away their wounded and dead.

On receipt of the information, Supol Faskari and his team responded promptly to the scene, engaging the bandits in a fierce battle, supported by Air Force components. Unfortunately, despite the efforts, we suffered significant losses,” the memo read.

Eleven soldiers sustained different degrees of gunshot injuries, all injured were rushed to the hospital by the military, and all corpses were also removed.

The bandits also suffered heavy casualties but have succeeded in removing them away from the scene.

Investigation has commenced. Further development would be communicated above for your information, please,” the memo added.

Due to the heavy casualties suffered, all remaining military personnel were relocated from the village to a camp 25 kM away in Ali Kere village.

Investigations into the incident have reportedly commenced, with more updates awaited.

Terrorists Revenge On Civilians

It was later reported that the retreating terrorists had the effrontery to return to Yar Malamai village in anger, shooting and burning homes although specific casualty figures from this subsequent attack have not been confirmed.

In northwestern Nigeria, the motives driving this terrorists remain unclear. The recurring spectacle of attacks, abductions, displacement of villagers, grieving mothers and children, and mass burials have sadly become a distressing aspect of Nigeria’s everyday news cycle.
