Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu, has returned to Abuja after two weeks overseas. He got into his official residence in Aso Rock Villa in the early hours of Wednesday, May 8.
The president’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga, yesterday reassured, “President Bola Tinubu, along with his aides, will return to Nigeria tomorrow from Europe”. Nigerians were beginning to worry about the absence of their Number 1 citizen.
Tinubu left Abuja on April 23, 2024, for The Netherlands on a three-day official visit on invitation of the Dutch Premier, Mark Rutte. While there he met with King Willem-Alexander, and Queen Maxima and had engagements with the Nigerian-Dutch Business and Investment Forum on creating more collaboration between Nigerian and Dutch businesses.
Subsequently, he departed for Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to participate in the World Economic Forum Special Meeting on Global Collaboration, Growth, and Energy for Development, held on April 28–29.
After the summit, Tinubu did not return to Nigeria as was widely expected. He reportedly detoured to London, England, for undisclosed personal engagements – the origin of concerns about his whereabouts.
He had since gone over to France for medical reasons – according to some media reports. Aso Villa gave no official information.
Tinubu’s return will assuage a rising tension regarding his safety. Even former Vice President, Abubakar Atiku raised the stakes on Tuesday, when he wondered if the country was now in “auto-pilot”. At the time, the Vice President, Kashim Shettima was on his way to the United States while Tinubu was not yet back in the country.
Both are now back in the saddle.
