At least eight persons have been confirmed dead from a fire involving an oil tanker in the Ometan community, situated within the Okpe local government area of Delta State.
Reports indicate the incident occurred last Friday evening. The tanker, travelling from Effurun, lost control while attempting to overtake a vehicle near the boundary bridge between Uvwie and Okpe Local Government Area.
Eyewitnesses say the front portion of the tanker separated from the rear compartment while in motion, resulting in an explosion. The fire quickly engulfed all structures within the vicinity.
Tragically, some inhabitants were unable to escape the raging inferno aided by the highly inflammable contents.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, visited the site. He expressed deep sorrow over the incident and offered his condolences to the affected community and the families of the victims. He said there was a need for solidarity in the face of such tragedies.
This is coming just days after a similar tanker explosion at Eleme, Rivers State claimed 5 lives and left at least 70 vehicles burnt.
