Former Imo State Governor, Emeka Ihedioha, who recently left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), met with Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, over the weekend. The meeting took place at the governor’s country home in Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South, Abia State.
The unusual meeting with the only governor of the Labour Party in the country immediately sparked political speculation ahead of 2027 – Nigeria’s next general election.
Ihedioha, a former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, was elected governor of Imo State in 2018 before his removal by Nigeria’s Supreme Court. In 2023, he lost to Senator Samuel Anyanwu in the power play for control of the PDP in Imo State.
Now politically weakened in the PDP, political pundits speculate he may be heading for the Labour Party, a political party that was warmly embraced by southeast electorates in the last elections.
After the weekend meeting, Ihedioha denied any political motives for the visit, only stating he was “delighted to have met with my esteemed brother and friend, Governor Otti,” and describing the engagement as a “convivial discussion.”
Ihedioha, who hails from Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State, previously stated he left the PDP, which he joined in 1999, because the party had taken on to a “a path that is at variance with my personal beliefs.”
He expressed concerns over the party’s deviation from its core values, inability to enact internal reforms, and inability to be an effective opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
