Executive Director of Enough is Enough (EiE) Nigeria, a civil society organization, Yemi Adamolekun, addressed the public on Sunday during an event commemorating the 10-year anniversary of the abduction of Chibok schoolgirls.

The abduction occurred on April 14, 2014, when terrorists took 276 girls from their dormitory in Chibok, Borno state, irking the conscience of the world. Over the years, some girls have been released, with the military reporting 76 escapes and 107 releases by Boko Haram in 2018.

Adamolekun lamented the continued silence of Nigerians in the face of 91 out of the 276 abducted girls still unaccounted for. She labeled the period since then as a “decade of shame.” and criticized the apparent lukewarmness in governmental rescue efforts.

Today, we communicate the reality that 48 parents of our abducted girls have passed on with the throbbing pain of not knowing the whereabouts of their daughters,” she said.

The government’s inability to effectively address these abductions has emboldened criminal groups to persist in their activities.

As a result, parents are compelled to decide between the safety and education of their children.

To protect the safety of all students and the future of education in Nigeria, it is imperative that we as a society keep holding the government responsible and pushing for long-term solutions to stop school kidnappings.

We must remain vigilant until every child is safe.”

Another speaker at the commemoration, Yemisi Ransome-Kuti, founder of the Nigerian network of non-governmental organizations, echoed the call for intensified action on the plight of the 91 missing girls.

Grace Dauda, one of the released girls who attended the program, emphasized the need for support for those rescued or released. She advocated passionately for the liberation of those still in captivity.
