A delegation from the National Universities Commission (NUC) has visited the site for the proposed Transatlantic University of Medicine and Health Science at Umuchukwu, Anambra State.

The school is established and funded by the renowned Nigerian-American doctor, businessman and philanthropist, Dr. Godwin Maduka. He is based in the United States of America.

Led by the Executive Secretary of NUC, Mr Chris Maiyaki, the team after inspection said it was impressed with the quality of infrastructure available for the medical university.

The inspection team was warmly received by an enthusiastic and jubilant local community.

The university is to be housed in the incredible 17-storey high-rise building, arguably one of Nigeria’s tallest buildings, tucked away in the quiet serene landscape of Umuchukwu, Orumba North local government area of Anambra.

Mr Maiyaki commended Maduka for his visionary project and gave assurance of the Commission’s unflinching backing in support of human capital development in the country which the school represents. A project of this magnitude, he remarked, was necessary for training the required skilled workforce needed to provide medical services in Nigeria.

Besides the high-rise central building, the university will feature residences for key officials such as the Vice-Chancellor, Bursar, Registrar, and Librarian, alongside lecture theatres, administrative offices, hostels, and other facilities.

Addressing the Commission’s members, Maduka said he envisioned the project to help reverse the brain drain faced in the medical industry in Nigeria. He assured stakeholders that the university would commence full operations by September 2024, admitting students and commencing full academic activities.

The pioneer departments at the time of take-off will include pharmacy, dental, nursing, radiology technology, and other allied health disciplines, in addition to research facilities.

Dr Maduka last featured prominently when he contested the highly charged 2021 gubernatorial election in Anambra State under the Accord Party, losing to the incumbent Gov. Charles Soludo.
