The White House has clarified that President Joe Biden did not proclaim Easter Sundays as Transgender Visibility Day. The Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre described any backlash over the president’s statement recognizing March 31 this year as transgender visibility day as “misinformation.”
Transgender Visibility Day which is celebrated every 31st of every March has been in existence since 2009, promulgated by former president Barak Obama, but this year it happened to coincide with Easter Sunday.
The next time it will coincide with Easter will be in the year 2086.
“So surprised by the misinformation that’s been out there around this and I want to be very clear: every year for the past several years on March 31, Transgender Day of Visibility is marked,” Karine stated, adding that the nature of the situation was evident “for folks who understand the calendar and how it works.”
“Easter falls on different Sundays, right, every year, and this year it happened to coincide with Transgender Visibility Day. And so that is the simple fact. That is what has happened. That is where we are,” she explained.
Before this clarification, Biden had received heavy knocks from America’s right wing. Republican House Speaker, Mike Johnson called the step “outrageous and abhorrent’. At the same time, Jim Blanks, the GOP Senate candidate said that it was “a slap in the face to hundreds of millions of Christians in America and across the globe.”
Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene claimed that “there is no length and the Democrats won’t go to mock your faith and to thumb his nose at God.”
Even former president Donald Trump branded the move “blasphemous” and accused the Biden Administration of a “years-long assault on the Christian faith.”
But on Sunday, Biden himself, pressed by newsmen to respond to the growing anger among his Christian critics, simply denied making such a proclamation.
Question: Speaker Johnson called it outrageous that Easter Sunday was a transgender day of visibility, what do you say to Speaker Johnson?
Biden: “He’s thoroughly uninformed.”
Question: Uninformed how?
Biden: “I didn’t do that.”
Notwithstanding all the clarification and denials, the storm of criticism from prominent Christians and conservatives won’t easily go away also by the fact that the Biden administration opted to ban children using religiously themed designs during the Easter Egg design contest in the White House on Easter Day .
The U.S. government says Transgender Visibility Day was a day to “honor the extraordinary courage and contributions of transgender Americans and reaffirm our Nation’s commitment to forming a more perfect Union”.
