The Ogun State Police Command has issued a warning to young women of the dangers of prostitution – especially the upwardly mobile, city-dweller variant locally known as ‘hook-up‘.
In a social media post shared on its official “X” handle on Tuesday, the command emphasized the risks women face of becoming victims of ritual killings, urging them to “wake up” and exercise restraint.
The post read, “AVOID BEING A VICTIM OF RITUAL KÌLLING: HOOK UP and its dangers! You may go and never return. Girls wake up! Young girls, do you know who you are being hooked up to? That person may exchange your beautiful head for peanuts. All that glitters is not GOLD!”
This warning comes amidst the growing trend of ritual killings and human trafficking across the country, typically involving young women as victims.
Prostitution, especially in informal settings such as ‘hook-up’ arrangements, exposes girls to risks of violence, exploitation, and even death.
The Ogun State Police Command’s use of social media to raise this awareness about the dangers of these illicit practices is commendable, and more of such advocacy is needed to help shift the focus of young Nigerian girls beyond the sexual commercialization of their bodies towards the intellectual marketability of their minds.
