Former Nigerian Minister of Sports, Solomon Dalung, has taken to social media to question the motives behind bouts of criticisms directed at Peter Obi by lieutenants and supporters of President Bola Tinubu.
Some of the harshest Obi’s critics he identified are Bayo Onanuga (special adviser to the president on information and strategy), Reno Omokri and Daniel Bwala (both opposition PDP supporters who ported to the president after he was declared winner of the election), and Bashir Ahmad (APC member and a media aide to former president).
In a post shared on his social media handle, Dalung said he was bewildered why a year after the 2023 presidential election was over the attacks on Obi had persisted.
“I have been praying to God to reveal to me why Bayo Onanuga, Reno Omokri, Daniel Bwala, Bashir Ahmed only chose to attack Peter Obi. Was he the only person who challenged Bola Tinubu in the 2023 elections?”, he wrote.
Obi was the candidate of the Labour Party and came third behind the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP’s candidate, Atiku Abubakar in the official results. But Obi’s supporters continue to insist the arguably Nigeria’s most flawed election was stolen from their candidate, and that the president was suffering from a crisis of legitimacy.
Dalung asked of Obi’s relentless critics, “Or is there something they are trying to cover up? Something is amiss” .
Peter Obi has refrained from talking about the last election, only occassionaly intervening on government policy issues and offering a different perspective as opposition. He has remained the focal point of the #Obidient Group – a movement of mostly Nigerian youths who say they believe that a “New Nigeria is POssible“.
