Elon Musk’s Neuralink has taken us into the future with the successful insertion of first brain chip implant into a recipient who used it to play Chess game with a computer.
Noland Arbaugh, the patient was seen in a livestream video maneuvering the Chess cursor solely with his mind. Arbaugh is paralyzed from the shoulders down due to a diving accident, underwent the insertion procedure in January, making him the first human to receive the brain chip implant.
Arbaugh said the surgery was “super easy” as recorded in the post-surgery session and saying he was delighted that the technology gave him back his ability since after the accident to play the Chess game he loves so much.
Elon Musk described the technology as “telepathy,” observing Arbaugh’s manipulation of the cursor through mental commands. Subsequently, Arbaugh engaged in an eight-hour session playing Civilization VI – a computer game.
But he did admit that the technology “is not perfect” and has flaws that require substantial improvement.
Elon Musk describes the implant as a way to interface the human mind and a computer system. The implant the size of a coin, is surgically inserted into the skull, housing microscopic wires capable of interpreting neuronal activity and transmitting corresponding signals to a computer system.
Initial trials were carried out on pigs, with subsequent experiments showing that monkeys could engage in online ping pong using the implant.
