Nigeria’s controversial Islamic cleric, Ahmad Gumi, has again claimed that Nigerian security is fully aware of the hideouts of the bandits and terrorists terrorizing Nigeria, particularly in the northern region.
When asked during an interview on Nigeria Info FM on Monday why it was easy for him to have access to these bandits but not the security people, he said that Nigerian authorities were being economical with the truth if they pretended not to know the location of these bandits.
“I don’t think they (security agents) are truthful with you. When I go, I go with them; I don’t go alone,” he claimed.
Gumi said only a negotiated settlement with the abductors of approximately 287 schoolchildren from Kuriga Government Secondary and LEA Primary Schools in the Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State could resolve the embarrassing impasse.
He stressed that negotiation is the most reasonable approach to ensure the safe return of the abducted pupils, saying it doesn’t necessarily mean that money has to exchange hands but perhaps an exchange of terror prisoners for the young captives.
Gumi – an advocate for amnesty to all terror groups in the north, said the bandits were mainly marginalized citizens lacking access to education and basic amenities. He reiterated his longstanding belief that the government should offer bandits amnesty akin to that offered to resolve the Niger Delta militancy in the 2010s.
When asked who these bandits were, Gumi described them as primarily herdsmen, predominantly of Nigerian stock, with a minority of foreigners among them.
