FA Cup Roundup: Man United stun Liverpool 4-3 After Extra Time To Clinch Semi Final Spot

It was a glorious night in Old Trafford as two heavyweight clubs, Manchester United and Liverpool battled it out for glory and honour in the FA Cup.

Earlier in the tournament, Manchester City secured their spot in the semi-finals with a 2-0 victory over Eddie Howe’s Newcastle, while Wolverhampton Wanderers suffered a 3-2 defeat against Coventry City, courtesy of a brace from Ellis Simms.

As the spotlight shifted to the clash between United and Liverpool, each team entered the game with different objectives. United sought to salvage their season, while Liverpool wanted a quadruple following their Carabao Cup final heroics last month.

United received a boost with the return of Rasmus Hojlund, who missed three previous matches due to injury, while Liverpool had Mo Salah back into the lineup, relegating Gakpo to the bench.

United took the lead in the 10th minute as Scott Mctominay tapped in the rebound from Garnacho’s saved effort. However, Liverpool immediately turned the tide, entering halftime with a 2-1 advantage courtesy of Alexis McAllister and Mo Salah scoring in quick succession.

United fought back valiantly, levelling the score in the 83rd minute through Antony. The match into extra time, where Harvey Elliot’s goal put Liverpool ahead 3-2.

Yet, the Reds’ hopes were dashed as United staged a comeback. Scot Mctominay’s precise pass found Rashford, whose finish netted the ball into the bottom left corner, restoring parity. Then, Amad Diallo capitalized on Harvey Elliot’s error on the edge of the 18-yard box, initiating a counter-attack alongside Garnacho, culminating in a decisive goal that sent Old Trafford erupting in euphoria.

This loss was the first Liverpool ever had while leafing at the interval, even as they seek to end the 103-year wait to win an FA Cup tie against United in Old Trafford.

Ten Hag also became the first manager this season to do the double over Liverpool, amidst all the noise of him and his job.
