Nigerian opposition party, the Labour Party, LP, has criticised as appalling and hollow, the New Year speech by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The party described the 13-minute speech as full of high levels of hypocrisy, deceit, and lacking in empathy.
LP’s response came in a statement it issued Tuesday, and signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh.
It said the president lacked the simple courtesy of comforting a nation in mourning, which on Christmas Day eve lost about 200 innocent villagers to terrorists and bandits in Bokkos area of Plateau State.
The conspicuous absence of such a grievous matter in the president’s speech led to debates if the president’s speech was prerecorded. The president had been on vacation to Lagos, his home country since 23 December and only returned to Abuja on 2 January.
In the LP’s dress down of the ruling party APC, it said, “The President’s helplessness in the face of his glaring failure to address the critical issues of insecurity, decayed infrastructure, the collapse of the manufacturing and productive sectors, inflation, and the naira to the dollar exchange rate, which is spiraling out of control, is written all over the speech.”
LP hit the president on corruption. “There was no word about the alleged massive looting of the nation’s resources by appointees and party leaders in various sectors. What a despicable form of deceit!”
On the economy, it remarked, “How does his ill-advised decision on fuel subsidy removal without a plan to ameliorate the suffering of Nigerians translate into an action taken in the national interest? Of what benefit were the millions of the nation’s dwindling foreign reserves frittered away under the guise of attending the climate change summit in Dubai to Nigerians?
“How do we begin to repair the damage being done to our democratic institutions, such as the judiciary, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, among others, by the APC administration?”, asked the party.
Concluding, LP asked for bipartisan cooperation in the legislative houses where LP is the third majority party to hold the president and his APC party to account. “While we call for prayers for our nation at this critical point in our history, we will continue to call on the National Assembly to look beyond party lines and ensure that the spirit and the letter of our Constitution is upheld at all times.”
