In a successful operation, security forces have rescued 24 individuals who were kidnapped along the Ajaokuta-Itobe Road in Kogi State.
The rescue mission involved a coordinated effort by personnel from the Nigerian Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and local vigilantes.
The victims, comprising travelers, students, and staff of Comprehensive High School, Ajaokuta, were abducted on Thursday, December 28, 2023. The abductors had taken them to an unknown location deep inside the forest around the Ajaokuta Local Government Area..
Confirming the rescue, Onogwu Mohammed, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Yahaya Bello, released a statement Saturday, December 30, crediting the governor with the success of the deft rescue operation.
“Upon receiving report of this distressing incident, Yahaya Bello, CON, the Governor of Kogi State, promptly issued directives to both security agencies and local vigilantes to embark on immediate actions that will lead to the freedom of the captives. He said the perpetrators of this reprehensible act must also be fished out”, according to a statement from Mohammed.
“The directive underscored Governor Bello’s unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of the citizens/residents under his charge”, he said.
The efforts of security forces yielded results within 48 hours, bringing home 21 captives and apprehending some of the kidnappers. The statement claims police are on the chase of the others at large.
Gov. Bello expressed satisfaction with the operation and commended the forces for effectiveness. He said Kogi State could not be a safe haven for criminals and bandits.
