SHORT STORY: Brief Impressions Of My First Visit To A Nigerian University

I learnt to trust my wittiness, you know, be smart.
I learnt to trust my gut, because oh boy, that was right.
I learnt that the innocence of faces had nothing to do with being pure,
It was all an act, unfortunately few could detect.
I learnt that there wasn’t always a difference between friends and enemies,
They all looked like foe.
The worst was to fall for a far fetched face,
With a smile plastered face you get destroyed with a snap.

I learnt it didn’t really matter, being alone or in group,
Either way, trouble still lurks.
I learnt first impressions mattered,
Because that determined your partner.
Coming to class never truly mattered,
When money is your partner.
I learnt dressing speaks volumes,
A wrong fit could make you misfit.

I learnt right from day one, hierarchy had already been set,
And freedom…(sigh), a trap well set.
Character, attitude, assertiveness, boldness and self acknowledgement,
Truly mattered, if you want to survive a jungle with no true master.
I found lecturers and minor officials to act fearless,
Piling bills as high as towers,
But when trouble lurks they all cower.

The usual tales about university – half were all myths,
No one really talked about the minor pits;
Sex for grades, cults, bribes, they were all true.
Show any sign of weakness, you would be old news.
S.U. (scripture union) for sure will beg you, ‘join us now, Jesus loves’,
Cults say, ‘join now to live stress free’,
Lectures say, ‘one night and you’ll pass for sure’.
True colours and new colours will be painted.
All the colors in a rainbow will all be sighted.
Word of advice;
Stand true,
Your light will shine bright.
