Imo State University (IMSU) students, during Governor Hope Uzodinma‘s campaign visit to the institution, expressed their discontent with a resounding chorus of “no light, no light,” as the governor took the podium to campaign.
Online video footage show students declined to engage with the governor due to a four-day power outage in the institution resulting from a strike by electricity workers.
One student recounted the scene, “Uzodinma visited Imo State University to address the students and campaign. As he ascended the platform, we began to chant ‘no light’ because we’ve been without electricity for the past four to five days“.
This power disruption was precipitated by a strike staged by electricity workers in solidarity with the assaulted NLC president, Joe Ajaero.
Last Wednesday, it was reported Police apprehended Ajaero at Owerri – the state capital, while he was organizing a rally to protest delayed wage payments for state workers. He was said to have endured severe brutality, necessitating medical attention at the Federal Medical Centre in Owerri, with his right eye severely affected.
The labour unions as a whole are threatening a nationwide strike for the brutalization, but Uzodinma instead of appeasing unions says the NLC boss got himself entangled with local partisan politics rather than stick with labour industrial issues.
Imo is one of three states along with Kogi and Bayelsa where gubernatorial elections are scheduled for Saturday 11 November.
