Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has bowed to pressure and reversed course in the hike of the state’s regulated BRT bus and Blue Rail transport fares.
The governor has issued a directive reinstating “until further notice” 25% discount. He previously on November 4 announced the end of the 50% subsidy that has been in place since August 2.
The announcement was made by a tweet from the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Unit. This marks the partial continuation of the transportation subsidy.
Kolawole Ojelabi, the Head of Corporate Communication at LAMATA, confirmed that the subsidy will be in effect from November 7, 2023.
The official statement explained, “In response to appeals from the public for the reinstatement of the 50% fare discounts on regulated bus and rail transport, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has directed the implementation of a 25% discount, effective from Tuesday, November 7, 2023.“
The government says it could only do 25% subsidy due to substantial increase in diesel prices during the three-month period, with a surge from N867 in August to N1,300 in November 2023, representing a 50% rise and impacting cost of operation.
