Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has received a Doctor of Law degree, honoris causa, from the University of East London (UEL), his alma mater in the United Kingdom.
The university awarded the honour during a graduation ceremony at its Docklands Campus in London.
Mbah studied law at UEL more than two decades ago before returning to Nigeria to build a career spanning law, business and public service. He has served as Governor of Enugu State since May 2023.
Prof. Fatima Ana-Diab, Vice-Provost for Business and Executive Dean of the Royal Docks School of Business and Law, read Mbah’s citation at the ceremony.
She traced his path from law student to entrepreneur and governor, saying his time at UEL shaped the discipline that later defined his career.
“More than two decades ago, Peter Mbah walked these halls as a law student, developing the knowledge, determination and leadership that would take him from UEL to the Nigerian Bar, the world of business and ultimately to public office as Governor of Enugu State,” Ana-Diab said.
From Student Leader To State Governor
As a student, Mbah led the university’s Students’ Law Society, which was later named UEL’s Most Productive Society of the Year during his tenure.
He also sat on the Students’ Representative Council and the School of Law Board, won UEL’s mooting competition, and represented the university at an international negotiation competition.
After earning his Bachelor of Laws in 2000, Mbah attended the Nigerian Law School and was called to the Nigerian Bar.
He went on to add a Master’s degree in Maritime and Commercial Law from Lagos State University, an MBA from Spain’s IESE Business School, executive training at Lagos Business School, and postgraduate study in Strategy and Innovation at the University of Oxford.
He founded Pinnacle Oil and Gas before entering government service, where he held roles as Chief of Staff and Commissioner for Finance and Economic Development in Enugu State ahead of his election as governor.
“At the heart of his approach is a belief in the transformative power of education. His administration has made significant investment in education and skills, seeking to move learning beyond traditional models and equip young people with the knowledge, competencies and confidence to participate in a changing global economy,” the citation stated.
Ana-Diab said Mbah’s journey shows what a UEL education can lead to, and that leadership is measured by what a person does with the opportunities given to them, not the office they hold.
Mbah Speaks On Education Spending And Service
In his acceptance speech, Mbah linked his approach to governance to a willingness to challenge inherited limits. He said ambition alone cannot sustain a person through difficult stretches of public life, which is why he anchors his work in service.
“One quality has always mattered to me: the willingness to disrupt. I have never been particularly interested in accepting the limits of my inherited circumstances,” he said.
He added that education “enlarges our capacity to transform the world,” and said his government commits 33% of the Enugu State budget to the sector.
According to him, the state is building schools and technology hubs to prepare young people for an economy increasingly shaped by knowledge and innovation.
Mbah thanked UEL for the honour and for its role in his development, before returning to the theme that opportunity carries responsibility — for graduates in the room and, he said, for himself as governor.
