The Director of the Abuja School of Social and Political Thoughts, Sam Amadi, has identified the factors he believes could propel Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi to victory over President Bola Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in the 2027 general election.
Speaking in an interview with Symfoni TV, Amadi argued that the current electoral map does not guarantee victory for either Tinubu or Atiku, insisting that Nigeria’s political landscape has shifted significantly since the 2023 presidential election.
According to Amadi, Tinubu entered the 2023 race with a strong reputation as the politician credited with transforming Lagos State, despite what he described as limited nationwide campaigning at the time.
That advantage, he said, cannot simply be assumed to carry over into 2027, given how much the political terrain has changed since then.
He said growing support among Nigerian youths, combined with Obi’s performance in the last election, could significantly alter the political equation this time around.
Amadi Argues Obi Would Have Won A Free And Fair 2023 Poll
Amadi maintained that Obi would have emerged president if the 2023 election had been free, fair and credible, pointing to what he described as evidence of strong support for the former Anambra State governor across several states.
“There is this sense that Nigeria needs something new, and the restiveness and disruption during the 2020 EndSARS incident is a milestone for Obi,” Amadi said, linking Obi’s political rise to the youth-led protest movement against police brutality that swept the country in October 2020.
He Says INEC Failed To Declare Obi Winner In Key States
Amadi went further, alleging that results in several states did not reflect the outcome later declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the body responsible for organising and supervising elections in Nigeria.
“In the last election, Peter Obi had almost more than half of the electorate on his side. There were clear indications that he won in Rivers, Plateau and some Northern states, but INEC didn’t declare him winner,” he said.
Amadi’s comments come as political parties and presidential hopefuls intensify preparations for the 2027 election, with analysts expecting the strength of youth support, voter realignment across regions and the performance of the major political blocs to play a decisive role in the outcome.
His remarks add to a growing body of commentary from political scientists and public affairs analysts weighing whether Obi’s 2023 support base can translate into a broader electoral coalition capable of challenging both the APC and the ADC in 2027.
