The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, installed 18 Mogajis and 11 Baales in a ceremony at the Banquet Hall of the Olubadan Palace in Oke Aremo, Ibadan, reaffirming his authority as the prescribed consenting power for all traditional titles in the ancient city.
The installation, held on June 24, 2026, came with a firm set of expectations.
Ladoja used the occasion to put the new chiefs on notice — particularly over the growing problem of land grabbing, which he described as a menace increasingly linked to the conduct of traditional title holders across Ibadanland.
Speaking through the Ashipa Olubadan, Salawudeen Amidu Ajibade, and the Ekerin Balogun, Akeem Mobolaji Adewoyin, Ladoja addressed the newly installed chiefs directly.
“As my ambassadors, wherever you find yourselves, do not be involved in any nefarious activity so that you will not be sanctioned,” he warned.
Chiefs Face Prosecution if They Enable Land Crimes
Ladoja went further, making clear that the warning carried real consequences. Any chief found culpable in land-related offences, he said, would face prosecution and the possible withdrawal of bail — a signal that the palace intends to hold its representatives to account, not simply issue ceremonial cautions.
The Olubadan also charged the new chiefs with a security responsibility in their respective domains.
He described them as chief security officers at the grassroots level, calling on them to remain vigilant and proactive against insecurity threatening their communities.
Ibadan, as Nigeria’s third-largest city and the capital of Oyo State, has a long and structured traditional governance system under the Olubadan-in-Council.
Mogajis and Baales serve as the monarch’s direct representatives at the community level, making their conduct a direct reflection on the throne.
Senior members of the Olubadan-in-Council attended the installation, including the Otun Olubadan, Eddy Oyewole; Otun Balogun, Kolawole Adegbola; and Osi Balogun, Abiodun Kola-Daisi, alongside other traditional leaders and invited guests.
