A leadership dispute within the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has taken a decisive turn after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) updated its records to recognise a new faction.
INEC removed the name of Shehu Musa Gabam and listed Prof. Sadique Gombe as national chairman on its official portal on June 17, 2026.
The development follows months of internal crisis triggered by Gabam’s removal by the party’s National Executive Committee over alleged misconduct.
The committee had installed Gombe as chairman, but Gabam challenged the decision in court and briefly regained recognition through an appellate ruling.
However, the Supreme Court later delivered a final judgment affirming the autonomy of political parties to manage their internal affairs.
The ruling confirmed that neither INEC nor courts can impose leadership on a political party.
Supreme Court Ruling Shapes Outcome
The apex court’s decision became the turning point in the dispute, effectively validating the Gombe-led leadership.
Following the judgment, INEC adjusted its records to align with the court’s position on party autonomy.
The SDP said the update restores internal control and ends months of uncertainty over its leadership structure.
Party spokesman Rufus Aiyenigba said the recognition strengthens the party ahead of future elections.
He said, “The decision by INEC to respect the rule of law and judicial authorities has been widely commended by Nigerians.”
He added, “Party members described it as a victory for constitutionalism and internal democracy.”
The party also said the decision aligns with provisions of the 1999 Constitution and the Electoral Act 2026.
SDP Eyes Stability Ahead Of 2027
With the leadership issue settled, the SDP said it is now focused on rebuilding and preparing for the 2027 general elections.
The party plans to present its presidential candidate, Prince Adewole Adebayo, as a key figure in its political strategy.
Aiyenigba said INEC’s action confirms the party’s right to determine its leadership without external interference.
He called on the commission to maintain this approach in its dealings with political parties.
He said the SDP remains committed to democratic development and national progress.
He said, “The National Chairman Prof. Gombe and members of the NWC assured the public that the party will continue to promote Nigeria’s true interests.”
The party added that it aims to provide an alternative platform for addressing economic hardship and insecurity.
The resolution of the dispute is expected to stabilise party structures and improve coordination ahead of electoral contests.
