Former US President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama have officially unveiled their first joint portrait together. The beautiful piece of art was created by Njideka Akunyili Crosby, a brilliant Nigerian visual artist.
The couple chose this historic moment to reveal the painting ahead of its public display in Chicago. This creation marks a major milestone because it is their very first dual portrait since leaving the White House.
Historically, the couple had separate paintings for the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery. Those previous pieces were done by Kehinde Wiley and Amy Sherald.
The former president shared the big announcement on his official X handle. He expressed great joy regarding the collaboration with the creative professional.
Historic Nigerian Collaboration
In his online statement, Obama praised the background and incredible skill of the painter. He was happy to share the platform with her during the reveal.
“It was great joining Njideka Akunyili Crosby — a gifted Nigerian-born, Los Angeles-based artist — to unveil our first portrait together,” Obama stated.
The artwork carries deep personal meaning for the family. It documents important moments of their lives over the decades.
“This piece reflects so many chapters of Michelle and my story, and we’re thrilled that it will be on display in the Hope and Change lobby at the Obama Presidential Center starting this Juneteenth,” he added.
Juneteenth Center Exhibition
The venue for the exhibition holds immense cultural value. Construction on the massive campus in Jackson Park began after years of planning.
The site will now host this new cultural treasure permanently. Visitors can view the masterpiece for free in the main entrance area.
The timing aligns perfectly with national celebrations. The official opening happens on a historic holiday that honors freedom and black heritage.
