At least 16 people have been killed in a suspected bandit attack on Kiliya village in Dutsinma Local Government Area of Katsina State.
The assault happened on Friday afternoon, May 29, 2026, as residents gathered outdoors after Juma’at prayers to celebrate Eid-el-Kabir.
Witnesses said the attackers rode into the village on two motorcycles, opening fire and causing panic among worshippers and families.
An eyewitness described how the peaceful gathering turned into chaos within minutes.
“After the Friday prayers, we were sitting together when I called a boy selling local drinks and bought a bowl from him.”
“Suddenly, the bandits arrived. The boy and I ran into a house and hid.”
“While inside, we heard screams and gunshots everywhere.”
“When the shooting eventually stopped, and we came out, we found about 16 lifeless bodies, including some of my uncles and cousins.”
Attack During Eid Gathering
Residents said the gunmen targeted specific homes after the initial shooting, increasing casualties and forcing many to flee.
Several people remain missing as families search for loved ones, while survivors have moved to nearby communities for safety.
Dutsinma and surrounding areas have seen repeated attacks in recent years, as armed groups operate from forest hideouts across Katsina State.
The Nigeria Police Force has yet to release an official statement on the incident.
Suspected Revenge Motive Emerges
Local sources believe the attack may be linked to earlier clashes between villagers and suspected bandits.
Reports indicate that two alleged members of a criminal gang were recently killed by vigilantes or residents.
A community source suggested this may have triggered retaliation.
“From all indications, this appears to be a revenge attack.”
“Two bandits were reportedly killed recently, and they were believed to be members of a notorious gang.”
“That may have triggered this brutal retaliation against the village.”
Katsina State remains one of the regions hardest hit by bandit violence in northern Nigeria.
Despite ongoing military operations, rural communities continue to face frequent attacks, kidnappings, and displacement.
