Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong has called on President Bola Tinubu to act fast on Nigeria’s worsening insecurity or quit office.
His comment followed the killing of Michael Oyedokun, a Mathematics teacher abducted by bandits in Oyo State.
The attack has deepened fear in the state, especially among parents, teachers and other families still waiting for news of abducted victims.
It has also revived anger over how armed groups keep targeting schools and rural communities across the country.
Meanwhile, the case has drawn fresh attention to the weakness of Nigeria’s rescue response when kidnappers strike.
Teacher’s Killing Sparks Outrage
Oyedokun was taken on Friday, May 15, from Community High School, Ahoro-Esiele, in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
Other schools attacked in the same area include Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota, and LA Primary School, Ogbomoso.
Elisha Olukayode Ogundiya, chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria in Oyo State, said 46 people were taken in the attacks.
He said most of the victims were children between the ages of two and 16.
The violence also left an assistant headmaster, Joel Adesiyan, and a commercial motorcyclist dead.
Oyo State later shut schools in four local government areas as security agencies began rescue efforts.
A video said to have been released by the bandits circulated on Monday, May 18, showing Oyedokun tied up and forced to speak before he was killed.
The footage triggered public anger and renewed concern over the safety of the other abducted victims.
Effiong’s Warning To Tinubu
In a terse statement on Monday, May 18, Effiong said the president must take full responsibility as commander-in-chief and act decisively.
“Tinubu has no business remaining in office as President. The killings cannot continue unabated. Resign now!”
He wrote the message on his verified X account after the viral video spread online.
Effiong, who is known for his strong criticism of government abuse and insecurity, said the country could not keep losing innocent people while leaders remain passive.
The lawyer’s attack came as Nigerians continued to debate the role of federal and state authorities in stopping abductions, killings and ransom-driven violence.
President Tinubu later described the Oyo attack as “barbaric” and said the federal government was working with the Oyo State Government to “rescue all the victims”.
He also said, “We expect a breakthrough soon.”
Authorities have reportedly arrested six suspects, including alleged informants and logistics suppliers linked to the attackers.
The Oyo killing is the latest in a long list of kidnappings that have turned security into one of the Tinubu administration’s biggest tests.
