The Enugu State Government has begun strict enforcement of a ₦500,000 fine against motorists caught driving against traffic, otherwise known as one‑way driving.
Commissioner for Transport, Obi Ozor, disclosed this in an interview with the newsmen on Wednesday, May 6, 2026. He said the measure is part of efforts to curb rising road accidents and instill discipline among motorists.
Ozor explained that despite heavy investment in road infrastructure, including dual carriageways and medians, many drivers continue to flout traffic rules.
“Government has spent billions to provide adequate road infrastructure, yet people deliberately drive against traffic, endangering their lives and those of others,” he said.
He cited areas such as Abakpa and the Penoks axis where motorists still engage in one‑way driving despite clear markings. Enforcement will apply to all roads in the state.
The commissioner expressed concern about fatalities linked to such violations. “Every day, we record accidents and carry bodies from roads that are in good condition. This is unacceptable,” he said.
Psychiatric Evaluation And Public Awareness
In addition to fines, offenders will undergo psychiatric evaluation to determine if substance abuse or mental health issues influenced their actions. Rehabilitation may be recommended before vehicles are released.
Ozor clarified that the policy is not about revenue generation but saving lives. “One minute will not kill you. Waiting at traffic lights or taking the proper route will save your life and that of others,” he said.
The government has launched public enlightenment campaigns in collaboration with transport unions and the media. Meetings have been held with taxi, tricycle, bus, tanker, and tipper operators to reinforce compliance.
Strict enforcement, including vehicle impoundment, will continue until motorists fully adhere to traffic rules.
The commissioner reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promoting road safety and reducing avoidable accidents.
