Hungary witnessed a historic political shift last night as Prime Minister Viktor Orbán conceded defeat to rival Peter Magyar in national elections.
Orbán, who has ruled for 16 years, acknowledged the outcome in a phone call to Magyar, who later confirmed the exchange on Facebook.
“Orbán congratulated us on our victory over the phone. Thank you Hungary!” Magyar wrote, before addressing supporters in Budapest.
At 45, Magyar has emerged as a fresh face in Hungarian politics. In his victory speech, he promised accountability and renewal.
“The healing of the nation will begin today. Hungary will no longer be a country without consequences. Those who stole from the country have to face consequences,” he declared.
Orbán, 62, admitted defeat before his supporters.
“The result of the election is clear and painful. We don’t have the weight of governing the country so we have to rebuild our communities. We never give up. The days ahead of us are for us to heal our wounds,” he said.
Turnout reached a record 66% after just five hours of voting, according to the National Election Office.
Supporters of Magyar’s Tisza party celebrated across the capital, while Orbán loyalists were seen in tears as news of his concession spread.
Europe Reacts To The Upset
European leaders hailed the result as a turning point.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said: “Hungary has chosen Europe. Europe has always chosen Hungary. A country reclaims its European path. The Union grows stronger.”
French President Emmanuel Macron posted: “France salutes a victory of democratic participation, of the Hungarian people’s attachment to the values of the European Union. Together, let us advance a more sovereign Europe.”
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz added: “The Hungarian people have decided. My heartfelt congratulations on your electoral success, dear Peter Magyar. Let’s join forces for a strong, secure and united Europe.”
According to BBC News, UK Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer also congratulated Magyar, calling the victory “an historic moment, not only for Hungary, but for European democracy.”
But in the Kremlin, Russia, silence and disbelief as President Vladimir Putin lost one of his greatest European allies.
Orbán has vehemently opposed Euro-American sanctions on Russia, warning that Europe needed Russia than actively making it an adversary.
Orbán’s Legacy And The Road Ahead
Orbán’s political journey began as a liberal, anti-Soviet activist before evolving into a Russia-friendly nationalist admired by the global far-right.
His tenure saw crackdowns on minority rights, media freedoms, and accusations of siphoning funds to allies—charges he denies.
He frequently clashed with the EU, most recently blocking a €90 billion loan to Ukraine. Allegations of Russian interference in the election added further tension.
Magyar framed the vote as a referendum on Hungary’s direction.
“This election was a choice between East or West, propaganda or honest public discourse, corruption or clean public life,” he said after casting his ballot.
The victory signals a dramatic turnaround for Hungary, with implications for its relationship with Brussels, Moscow, and Washington.
Orbán’s close ties to Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin had long defined Hungary’s foreign policy.
