Nigeria Issues Flood Warning from Heavy Rainfall in 10 States

The Federal Government has issued a warning that several communities across 10 states may experience heavy rainfall and possible flooding between April 8 and April 12, 2026.

The alert was contained in a flood prediction notice signed by Usman Bokani, Director of the Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department at the Ministry of Environment.

“The following locations and their environs are likely to witness heavy rainfall that may lead to flooding within the period of prediction: 8th April – 12th April, 2026,” the notice read.

According to the ministry, the affected states include Ebonyi, Anambra, Ogun, Taraba, Cross River, Benue, Imo, Delta, Rivers, and Abia.

In Ebonyi, Afikpo and Nkalagu were listed, while in Anambra, Atani, Iyowa Odekpe, Odekpe, and Onitsha may be impacted.

Ogun State communities such as Ayetoro and Ilaro were identified, alongside Donga, Kwata Kanawa, Lau, Serti, Takum, and Yorro in Taraba.

Cross River towns including Edor, Ikom, and Itigidi were named, as well as Igumale in Benue, Nworievbi, Okigwe, Otoko, and Owerri in Imo, and Oko Anara in Delta.

The advisory also listed Port Harcourt in Rivers State and Umuahia in Abia State as vulnerable areas.

“The listed locations and their surrounding areas are likely to witness heavy rainfall that may lead to flooding within the prediction period,” the ministry explained.

This warning follows earlier alerts by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) cautioning farmers against early planting after deceptive rains in February and March.

In March, the Lagos State Government also advised residents to prepare for heavy rainfall and flash flooding as the rainy season approaches.

The Ministry of Environment has now called on stakeholders to take precautionary steps to mitigate risks.

Nigeria’s flood management problems are compounded by poor drainage systems and rapid urbanization.
