U.S. Consul General Swart met with Folashade Ambrose-Medebem in Lagos on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, to expand bilateral trade.
The high-level meeting took place at the Lagos Ministry of Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade and Investment to deepen commercial ties.
“We met to explore opportunities that will strengthen the U.S.-Nigeria commercial relationship,” Swart alleged during the session.
Furthermore, the discussion focused on ways to drive innovation. The officials looked at how U.S. firms can partner with local businesses.
According to Vanguard, Lagos is the primary destination for American investment within the West African sub-region.
“Our discussion identified avenues for U.S. companies to collaborate with their Nigerian counterparts,” Ambrose-Medebem alleged.
The United States remains one of Nigeria’s leading foreign investors. Total foreign direct investment reached $7.9 billion in 2024.
Furthermore, this investment supports thousands of jobs. The partnership focuses on sustainable growth and lasting economic impact.
“The goal is to drive growth, innovation, and lasting economic impact through these strategic partnerships,” the Consul General alleged.
Strengthening Bilateral Trade Pathways
Mrs. Ambrose-Medebem currently serves as the Commissioner for Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade and Investment in Lagos State.
She oversees policies that help foreign firms enter the local market. This includes simplifying the registration process for new businesses.
“We want to create a space where innovation and lasting economic impact are the priorities for every investor,” she alleged.
Meanwhile, the U.S. government has expressed continued interest in Nigeria’s tech sector, which saw significant growth last year.
“The partnership between our nations is built on mutual respect and a desire for shared prosperity,” an official document alleged.
Lagos serves as the commercial hub of Nigeria. Consequently, the state attracts over 60% of all foreign direct investment into the country.
“Avenues for U.S. companies to collaborate with their Nigerian counterparts will lead to significant growth,” Swart alleged.

Furthermore, the 2024 investment figure of $7.9 billion proves the resilience of the Nigerian market despite global fluctuations.
Driving Innovation In Lagos Markets
The Consul General and the Commissioner discussed specific sectors. These included digital technology, agriculture, and manufacturing.
“We are looking for ways to drive innovation across all sectors of the Lagos economy,” Ambrose-Medebem alleged during the talks.
Furthermore, the Lagos State government provides various incentives for foreign firms. These include tax breaks for pioneer industries.
“The United States remains one of Nigeria’s leading foreign investors,” the official consulate report stated on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the collaboration intends to solve local challenges. This includes improving supply chain efficiency in the retail sector.
“Lasting economic impact will come from these deliberate steps toward better trade relations,” the Consul General said.
The meeting ended with a commitment to hold regular trade summits. These summits will bring together business leaders from both nations.
“We will continue to work together to ensure that our commercial relationship remains strong,” the Commissioner alleged.
