University of Nigeria Nsukka has praised the Ndili Foundation for promoting academic excellence through a scholarship scheme.
The initiative supports outstanding students while preserving the legacy of the late academic, Frank Nwachukwu Ndili.
Vice-Chancellor Simon Ortuanya gave the commendation on Friday in Nsukka during the inauguration of the first cohort.
A total of 21 beneficiaries were unveiled, drawn from a planned 50 scholars under the programme.
The scholarship covers tuition, accommodation, and a monthly stipend. It also includes mentorship, leadership development, and structured community living.
“This is a massive boost to our academic community and a direct investment in the future leaders of Nigeria,” Ortuanya said.
He added that the programme aligns with the theme of raising a new generation of African excellence.
Scholarship Targets Leadership And Excellence
Ortuanya told the beneficiaries that the award carries responsibility beyond financial support.
“This scholarship is not just a free ticket to a degree; it is a seal of excellence,” he said.
“It places a responsibility on you for sound character, unwavering values, and the initiative to become change agents,” he added.
He also commended the foundation’s chairman, Amaechi Ndili, for sustaining the legacy of the late professor.
Meanwhile, Amaechi Ndili urged the scholars to treat the opportunity as both honour and duty.
“You have been given recognition, support, access, and a community that believes in your future,” he said.
“Because you have been given these things, more will be required of you,” he added.
The foundation was designed to nurture young Africans who see education as a tool for service.
Legacy Of Academic Excellence Drives Programme
In a keynote address, Anthony Attama described Frank Ndili as a pioneer in nuclear physics.
He said Ndili was Nigeria’s first nuclear physicist and Africa’s first professor in the field.
He also served as the seventh Vice-Chancellor of UNN, a period often described as a golden era.
“Take personal responsibility for your growth,” Attama told the scholars.
“Your background does not define your future; your effort, discipline and choices do,” he added.
He encouraged them to avoid shortcuts and embrace integrity in their academic journey.
Meanwhile, Petra Nnamani said the foundation focuses on human capital development.
She explained that the goal is to advance world-class education across Africa through targeted support.
