Nigeria recorded several tragic fire outbreaks across Lagos, Ondo, and Cross River states this weekend. These unconnected incidents killed at least four people and destroyed properties worth millions of Naira.
In Lagos, a massive gas explosion rocked the Ajah area in the early hours of Saturday, March 21, 2026. The disaster happened around 2:36 am along the Lekki-Epe Expressway at the Tera Ahmed bus stop.
Officials alleged that a speeding 20-tonne tipper truck rammed into a stationary 30-tonne gas tanker from behind.
This collision triggered a fierce inferno that spread to three warehouses and 10 roadside shops nearby.
Fatal Gas Tanker Explosion In Ajah
According to a report by Channels Television, two people died in the blaze. The victims were the tipper driver and his assistant, who were both “burnt beyond recognition.”
Firefighters from Lekki Phase II and Epe stations eventually put out the fire. They saved a nearby Total Filling Station and a fully loaded 33,000-litre fuel tanker from the flames.
Lagos State Fire Service boss, Margaret Adeseye, stated that her team recovered four vehicles and a forklift from the ruins.
“The accident occurred at 02:36 wee hours of the day,” the statement confirmed.
Tragedy In Ode-Aye Home
In Ondo State, another fire killed two young sisters at their home in Ode-Aye on March 18. The victims were identified as Queen Ohwo, 6, and Everlyne Ohwo, 4.
Police spokesperson DSP Abayomi Jimoh said the parents, Mr and Mrs Ohwo Peter, were in deep shock. Preliminary reports suggested the fire started from cooking activities in the house.
CP Adebowale Lawal has ordered a “thorough and discreet investigation into the incident to ascertain the exact cause.” He also asked officers to work with the Federal Fire Services.
Calabar Filling Station Inferno
In Cross River, the Fonex Gas Station on Edibe Edibe Street in Calabar South exploded on Saturday afternoon. The blast completely razed the private facility and injured several residents.
Eyewitnesses alleged that the fire might have started from a phone call made near a gas dispenser. Others believed a faulty electrical system in the building triggered the explosion.
The fire spread to nearby buildings, forcing business owners to run for safety. According to Punch Newspapers, hoodlums even looted goods from the burning shops before police arrived.
Police PRO ASP Eitokpah Sunday confirmed that officers were deployed to stop the looting. He said the state is working to improve fire response times in residential areas.
