The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has directed the Muslim Ummah across Nigeria to begin the search for the new crescent moon of Shawwal 1447AH.
In an official statement released by the Sultanate Council on Tuesday, the Sultan designated today, Wednesday, March 18, 2026, which corresponds to the 29th day of Ramadan, as the day to look out for the crescent.
The sighting of this moon officially signals the conclusion of the month-long Ramadan fast and heralds the beginning of Eid al-Fitr celebrations.
The Sultan urged any Muslim who sights the crescent to report the observation to their nearest District or Village Head for verification and onward communication to the Council.

“The sighting of the moon remains a fundamental religious obligation in determining our festive periods,” the statement signed by the Wazirin Sokoto, Prof. Sambo Wali Junaidu, read.
“We encourage the faithful to participate in this search to ensure the unity of the Ummah in our celebrations.”
Nationwide Preparations and Public Holidays
As the spiritual leader of Nigerian Muslims, the Sultan’s verified announcement will determine whether the fast ends tonight (if the moon is sighted) or continues for a 30th day.
In anticipation of the festivities, the Federal Government has already declared Thursday, March 19, and Friday, March 20, 2026, as public holidays to mark the Eid-el-Fitr celebration.
Markets across major cities like Kano, Lagos, and Abuja have reported a surge in activity as families stock up on food items and clothing for the “Sallah” period.
The call for the moon sighting comes on the heels of recent security challenges, including the coordinated suicide bombings in Maiduguri earlier this week.
In his address, the Sultan emphasized the need for continued prayers for the peace, unity, and stability of the nation.
He urged Muslims to use the spiritual gains of the Ramadan fast to foster harmony and support those affected by hardship and insecurity across the country.
