The United States Department of State has issued a fresh security advisory for Americans currently in Lebanon, urging them to remain alert and consider available departure options as tensions continue across the Middle East.
In the notice released on March 12, the U.S. Embassy Beirut said it is closely tracking developments in the region and sharing updates to help citizens make decisions about their safety.
“We are monitoring the situation in the Middle East closely and will keep you updated so you can make decisions about your safety,” the advisory said.
The embassy added that the safety of U.S. citizens remains the top priority for the administration of Donald Trump and Marco Rubio.
“President Trump, Secretary of State Rubio, and the Department of State have no higher priority than the safety and security of American citizens,” the statement said.
Officials also said the U.S. government is working to expand travel options for Americans who want to leave the region.
“If you want to leave the Middle East, the U.S. government is ready to assist by providing you the latest information about the departure options available,” the embassy stated.
Embassy Advises Americans to Consider Departure
According to the advisory, commercial flights remain available for travelers who choose to leave Lebanon.
Flights operated by Middle East Airlines are currently departing from Beirut–Rafic Hariri International Airport. The embassy said Americans should evaluate the option carefully.
“Americans should strongly consider departing on one of these flights if they believe it is safe to do so,” the notice said.
However, officials also advised citizens who decide to remain in Lebanon to prepare for the possibility of sheltering in place.
“If you choose to not take advantage of available departure options, you should be prepared to shelter in place in a secure location,” the advisory said.
The embassy asked Americans to maintain supplies such as food, water, medications, and other essential items. It also warned people to avoid protests, stay aware of their surroundings, and follow instructions from local authorities.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Embassy in Beirut said it will resume emergency passport services for Americans who have lost or expired travel documents. Routine consular services remain suspended for now.
“Americans whose passport has been lost, stolen, or expired must send an email to the embassy to arrange an emergency appointment,” the notice explained.
U.S. officials also advised citizens to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program so they can receive security alerts and updates from the embassy.
