Peter Obi Says Misplaced Values, Poor Leadership Driving Poverty in Nigeria

Peter Obi, a potential presidential aspirant of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has again advanced reasons why more than half of Nigeria’s population lives below the poverty line despite its vast resources.

Obi spoke in Abuja while receiving the leadership of the Association of Skilled and Vocational Artisans of Nigeria (ASVAN), led by National President Obijuru Everest.

He said Nigeria’s poverty is a result of misplaced values. “We are poor because we have chosen to be poor. We give titles and front-row seats of honour to those who steal public funds, and yet we expect to grow,” he stated.

Obi recalled a discussion with Indonesian leaders, saying the Asian tiger nation thrives because of better leadership.

He said Nigeria must fight corruption, invest in education and healthcare, and support Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).

“Join the fight for a great Nigeria. Stop worshipping those who steal your money, stop giving them titles, and stand up for what is right. Vote, defend your votes, and help produce good leaders at all levels,” he added.

In his remarks, Obijuru Everest said ASVAN, with over two million members across Nigeria, supports Obi’s vision.

He explained that artisans are the engine of the economy but lack government support. He revealed that ASVAN is advocating for a bill in the National Assembly to officially recognise the artisan sector and regulate its activities.

Everest also announced plans for a world-class artisan workshop village to help members produce quality products.

“We have been engaging with the government, which promised us land for this project over the past three years, but we are still waiting,” he said.

He added that the initiative would transform Nigeria’s artisan sector and strengthen the economy.
