Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has called on women to take greater responsibility in mentoring young girls, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
She also encouraged them to promote modest dressing and strong moral values.
Speaking at an interfaith event in Abuja, Mrs Tinubu challenged women to mentor at least one girl from an indigent background.
“I challenge you to have a mentee with you, not somebody you’ve been mentoring all the time, but just pour into the life of a young girl from an indigent background. You know, help them, even if it is to give a scholarship, encourage them, and teach them. Teach them good virtue,” she said.
Call For Modesty And Discipline
She added that women should guide young girls on appropriate dressing and conduct.
“Teach them how to be good women, teach them how to dress well, because we see that our young people, you know, they’ve really taken it. I don’t read social media, so it doesn’t bother me,” she explained.
Mrs Tinubu insisted that beauty should not be defined by revealing clothing.
“Teach them how to cover up, and you know, being naked is not beauty. Beauty comes from within,” she said.
According to her, character and conduct should reflect true beauty, not outward appearance.
While the First Lady’s remarks reinforced the importance of mentorship, modesty, and moral guidance, she can also examine women’s revealing attire, rather than simply labelling it as a ‘chase for beauty,‘ might in fact be an expression of personal confidence, a way to show sensuality, or even a strategic move towards the opposite gender.
This kind of dressing can be seen as a way to gain attention or leverage in interactions.
Furthermore, the desire for ladies to dress provocatively is probably not new, potentially existing across generations and reflecting a common human urge for self-expression, regardless of age.
Ultimately, addressing how people dress might need more than just the First Lady’s advocacy. It could require a serious fundamental shift in societal values, perhaps supported by religious norms and even laws, to genuinely influence this kind of innate public behavior.
