Cooking Gas Prices Surge to ₦1,300 Per Kg Across Nigerian Cities

Residents across Nigeria are facing sharp increases in cooking gas prices, while the recent hike in petrol pump prices continues to strain household budgets and supply chains.

In Lagos, checks around Onike, Iwaya, and Yaba showed that one kilogramme of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) now sells between ₦1,250 and ₦1,300, up from about ₦900 last week. A 5kg cylinder costs between ₦7,500 and ₦8,167, while 12.5kg refills range from ₦13,750 to ₦19,200.

Residents expressed frustration over the sudden increases. One buyer at Lagos complained, “Everything is going up at the same time. Transport fares have increased due to petrol, and cooking gas is also high. We don’t even know which one to complain about first.”

Retailers attributed the surge to higher transportation costs following the petrol hike and supply chain pressures.

A dealer explained, “When petrol goes up, everything goes up. We use vehicles to transport the gas cylinders. The cost is transferred to us, and we have no choice but to adjust.”

In Abuja, a 12.5kg cylinder now sells between ₦17,000 and ₦19,500 in Garki and Wuse, up 25% from last week.

Vendors linked the rise to imported LPG costs, shipping delays, and Brent crude increases. Civil servant Ibrahim Musa lamented, “Gas was our affordable alternative; now it’s pricier than kerosene.”

Port Harcourt residents reported even steeper prices, with 12.5kg refills ranging from ₦18,500 to ₦21,000.

Kano markets also saw 6kg cylinders priced between ₦9,000 and ₦10,500. Families in border communities said they are rationing gas or returning to firewood.

Depot owners across Nigeria have increased prices by about ₦100 per kilogramme, with major distributors such as NIPCO, Navgas, and Techno Oil now quoting ₦885–₦950 per kg.

Industry sources linked the adjustments to global LPG disruptions caused by the situation in the Middle East.
