The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has exposed a crime ring using artificial intelligence tools to pose as JAMB officials and cheat desperate candidates.
JAMB registrar Professor Ishaq Oloyede said this at a press conference in Abuja on Saturday. He described the case as a serious attack on fairness and merit in Nigeria’s education system.
The board has arrested the main suspects and says over 100 candidates from 25 states are involved.
Oloyede said JAMB has recommended to Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa that the admission registration of the 100 candidates be cancelled as a warning to others.
“This briefing addresses a grave development that strikes at the heart of fairness, merit and integrity,” he said. “We have invested heavily to protect honest candidates, but criminal networks and willing collaborators continue to test the system.”
He warned that some parents are aware partners in the fraud, paying for fake schemes to secure admission for their children.
He added that about 38,000 underage candidates signed up this year, and many are being drawn into organised cheating networks.
JAMB also said three centre owners are in custody for allegedly helping candidates bypass rules.
Dozens of CBT centres and tutorial centres involved in fraud have been suspended or shut down.
The DSS, Nigeria Police, and Office of the National Security Adviser are supporting the probe.
Oloyede regretted that the Board has the tools to stop malpractice but often face public criticism when it acts. “Our only challenge is public opinion. When we act, some label us draconian,” he said.
