Wike In London to Mourn with Late Senator Mpigi’s Family

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has described the death of Senator Barinada Mpigi as a great loss to Rivers State and Nigeria.

Mpigi, who represented Rivers South-East Senatorial District, died on February 19, 2026, at the age of 64 after a brief illness.

In a statement issued Thursday by his aide Lere Olayinka, Wike said Mpigi was “a dependable ally who stood by his friends, even during trying times.”

He led a delegation of Rivers leaders to condole with the senator’s family in London, assuring his widow, Patricia Mpigi, of continued support and a befitting burial.

The delegation included Wike’s sons Jordan and Joaquin, Speaker of the Rivers Assembly Martin Amaewhule, senators Magnus Abe, Allwell Onyesoh, Olaka Nwogu, and PDP chairman Aaron Chukwuemeka.

Mpigi served in the 10th Senate and earlier spent two terms in the House of Representatives.

He chaired the Senate Committee on Works and was known for his role in infrastructure oversight and educational empowerment.

Governor Siminalayi Fubara described him as “a brother, a consummate politician, and one of the leading lights in Rivers State.”

Tributes continue to pour in from leaders across party lines.

Chai, leaving the world at such a young age. I hope he was right with God before his passing.
