Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar says he regrets his role in forming the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2013, arguing that Nigeria’s situation has worsened since the ruling party came to office in 2015.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, Atiku recalled how opposition leaders united in 2014 to challenge former President Goodluck Jonathan.
“We came together and formed APC because we felt democracy was faltering, only for us to end up at the same position we found ourselves in 2014 worse,” he said.
He noted that insecurity and economic instability were the main concerns at the time, but insisted conditions have since gotten from bad to worse.
“In 2014, the major challenges were insecurity, the economy and so on. Now it is even worse than what we fought against,” Atiku stated.
He called for lessons from the past, saying any new coalition must focus on restoring “true democracy” in Nigeria.
Goodluck Jonathan was reported to have solicited the support of Atiku not to join the coalition against him, but he was adamant.
The Presidency quickly responded to Atiku’s claim. Atiku only on Friday, lost his political protege, Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Atiku’s home state of Adamawa, to the APC.
Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, mocked Atiku in a post on X, telling him to retire and relocate to Dubai.
Onanuga described Gov Fintiri’s defection to the APC as “a big blow for Atiku” and alleged that since it stripped him of his home base in Adamawa, which other state would he expect to win in a general election?
