Former British ambassador to the United States, Peter Mandelson, has been released on bail after his arrest in London on suspicion of misconduct in public office.
The 72-year-old was taken into custody Monday by Metropolitan Police officers as part of an investigation launched earlier this month.
Police confirmed the arrest in a statement: “Officers have arrested a 72-year-old man on suspicion of misconduct in public office. He was arrested at an address in Camden on Monday, 23 February and has been taken to a London police station for interview.”
They added that searches were carried out at properties in Wiltshire and Camden.
Mandelson was later released on bail pending further inquiries. His arrest follows the release of emails by the US Department of Justice suggesting closer ties between Mandelson and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein than previously acknowledged.
The emails indicated Mandelson shared information with Epstein while serving in Gordon Brown’s government in 2009. He has admitted regretting the association but has not commented on the latest revelations.
Earlier this month, Mandelson resigned from the Labour Party and the House of Lords.
His removal as ambassador to Washington in 2024 had already generated even more controversy.
The scandal has increased, with Parliament demanding documents on his vetting and other personalities, including Prince Andrew, facing scrutiny.
