Ex-CBN Deputy Governor Tunde Lemo Eyes Ogun Governorship 2027

A former deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Dr. Tunde Lemo, has declared his interest in contesting the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State.

Lemo made the announcement on Wednesday while participating in the ward congresses at Ward 12, Ita-Agemo, Isale-Igbein in Abeokuta.

The accomplished banker said his decision was driven by a desire to fast-track grassroots development. He said that Ogun State is endowed with agricultural potential that requires the right leadership to harness for the benefit of the people.

He assured party members of inclusive government and loyalty to the All Progressives Congress (APC). “It is about governance. It’s about raising the bar and ensuring the best for our people,” he said.

Lemo attributed the peaceful conduct of the ward congresses to the transformative policies of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. He said the congresses were organised to solidify unity and harmony within the party.

“You can see the crowd, and we are members of one family. You have not seen anybody fighting. We are very strong and vibrant, and people are happy because of the transformative agenda of President Bola Tinubu,” he said.

He added that the congresses would build the base for future national congresses.

Lemo lauded Governor Dapo Abiodun’s developmental trajectory, citing the creation of the Agro-Cargo Airport, which has received approval to commence commercial flights.

“I don’t want to canvass personal position here, but my presence today underscores the fact that APC is an organic party. We are building the base, and by the special grace of God, we will get there,” he said.

Eyes on 2027

The former CBN deputy governor confirmed his ambition for 2027. “Yes, of course, I have my eyes on 2027 just like everyone else, but everything is in the hands of God,” he said.

He emphasised that his focus is on governance and raising standards for the people of Ogun State.

Lemo extended greetings to Muslim and Christian faithful as they commenced fasting seasons of Ramadan and Lent. He wished them peace, reflection, and spiritual fulfilment.

He called for religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence, noting that the fasting seasons of Muslims and Christians coincided this year.

“Ramadan and Lenten seasons are times of deep reflection, sacrifice, and unity,” he affirmed.

He said he would continue to identify with both communities throughout the fasting period, championing values of peace, unity, and communal harmony.

Renewed Hope Agenda

The governorship aspirant urged adherents of faith to remain steadfast in supporting the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu. He encouraged prayers for peace and tranquility in the country.

“By the special grace of God, it is about governance. It’s about raising the bar and ensuring the best for our people,” he said.

Dr. Tunde Lemo served as deputy governor of the CBN from 2003 to 2014. He is a renowned economist and banker, credited with reforms in Nigeria’s financial sector.

He has held leadership roles in banking and finance, including chairmanship of several institutions. His entry into Ogun politics is expected to reshape the contest ahead of 2027.

Will his technocratic background give him an edge in the race? Or will entrenched political structures in Ogun State favor mainstream politicians?
